“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore
Welcome to the Society!
SPEWW, the Society for the Promotion of Equality for Witches & Wizards, is an all-volunteer Portland nonprofit (formerly known as PDXpelliarmus, a chapter of Fandom Forward/Harry Potter Alliance), on a mission to fight against the real world Dark Arts using the most powerful weapon we have, LOVE! While Hermione used S.P.E.W. as a springboard to fight for the rights of magical creatures in society where wizards had all the power, she didn’t really get to put it to good use until after she left school. We have vulnerable people in our own community and created SPEWW as the solution. We also hope to do some good in the world, and we’ve been doing it since 2013.
SPEWW brings together magical fans of all ages based in or near the Portland area. We harness the enthusiasm and inspiration of the Harry Potter fandom to achieve great things for our community. Teaming up with local businesses and nonprofits, we organize book and school supply drives, special events, and fundraisers. We encourage activism and civic engagement, and foster a community of magical people who want to use their bravery, determination, creativity, and ambition to make the world a better place.
We Are Book Eight!
What does “We Are Book Eight” mean? It means that we continue the story of Harry Potter through our creative works, through our friendships, and through our activism. Hate has no place in our story*.
